Carrie Lois Walker

July 28, 1936 — March 29, 2025

Aiken, SC

Carrie “Lois” Walker, aged 88, peacefully entered her final rest on Saturday, March 29, 2025, with loving family by her side.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Patricia Walker Medlock of Fletcher, NC, and grandchildren, Christopher Medlock (Bena) of Raleigh, NC, Brian Medlock (Anna) of Mint Hill, NC, Stephen Medlock of Fletcher, NC, Glen Hallman (Jessica), and Bradley Hallman, both of Aiken, SC. Lois also leaves behind six beautiful great-grandchildren, Jacob, Max, Maya, Madison, and Lexi Medlock, and Jaxson Hallman.

In addition to her beloved husband of nearly 58 years, George E. Walker (“Granddaddy”), Lois is preceded in death by her parents, Marshall "Pete" and Margaret Ruth Bartley, her dear daughters, Margaret Elaine Walker and recently departed Linda Walker Hallman, brothers, Larrie Bartley and Marshall "Tootie" Bartley, and sister, Virgie Shealy.

Lois was a strong, hard-working, faithful, and dedicated woman who devoted her early years to raising her daughters and being a loving wife to her husband. She retired from the A&P after 25 years of service but went on to work part-time for Piggly Wiggly and Food Lion. In her later years, once the grandkids started coming, she became known as “Nanny,” a name that stuck and forever defined what she meant to her family.

Lois was known for her contagious laughter, with which you couldn’t help but join as it filled the room with joy. Lois was quick-witted with a sharp sense of humor and a gift for anecdotal storytelling. Those who knew her were blessed by her affection, love, and kindness. She insisted on a hug whether you were coming or going.

Lois was a content woman who could often be found tending to the flowers in her yard, enjoying trips with her daughters to the mountains or the beach, or sitting in her favorite recliner alongside her sweet little Shih Tzu, Prissy, as she completed one word search book after another. Her life was rich with people and things that she enjoyed. Her trademark was her excellent cooking for family gatherings, especially for Thanksgiving. Regardless of the occasion, her family looked forward to her famous cornbread dressing, macaroni and cheese casserole, butter beans, collards, turkey, and ham. She always had a pitcher of sweet tea ready, and her delicious coconut pies and old-fashioned seven-layer cakes were gone before you knew it. The grandkids (and Granddaddy) could always count on plenty of sweet treats in the ceramic jar on her counter in those rare moments when dinner wasn’t quite ready.

Lois spent her childhood in Saluda, SC, but lived her entire adult life in Aiken where she made a permanent home and raised her family. She was an active and devoted member of the Pentecost United Methodist Church in nearby Warrenville.

The memory of her life will live on through her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, and extended family. To have known Lois is to now miss her, but the memories of her laughter, her warm company, her engaging conversation, and, of course, her excellent cooking will never be forgotten.

A memorial service for Lois will be announced soon.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pentecost United Methodist Church located at 2497 Pine Log Road.
