Mr. Vernon Lee Holmes, 74, entered into rest on Friday October 13, 2023.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Brenda Gunter Holmes; parents, Robert Ernest and Emma Frances Holmes; and brother, Roger Allen Holmes.
He is survived by his sons, Quince Vernon (Maranda) Holmes, and Jason (Deborah) Wollam; brothers, James Bradley (Linda) Holmes, and Robert Ernest (Evelyn) Holmes Jr.; grandchildren, Parker Holmes, Jennifer Lyle, Michele McBride; great grandchildren, Hailey Lyle, and Leyton Watson; dear friend, Judy Boyd; and his Marine Corps brothers, Bill Lazar, and Gary “Red” Kruse.
Vernon joined the USMC in 1967 and served in Vietnam. He was also assigned as a presidential detail to President Nixon and a detail to King Hussein of Jordan. During his time with the Marines, he earned the National Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Cross of Gallantry, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal, and two Purple Hearts. After 4 years of service, he started work as a chemist at SRS where he retired from after many years of service. He was a member of Plum Branch Baptist Church. He will be remembered for being a loving husband, father, brother, and friend.
A Memorial Service, celebrating his life, will be held 3 P.M. on Monday October 30, 2023 at the Chapel of Napier Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service.
